Kannada Rajyotsava: Nourishing Karnataka's Children, Building Its Future

Celebrating Karnataka. Nourishing its future.

Kannada Rajyotsava celebrates Karnataka's rich heritage, shared identity and journey of progress. It is also an opportunity to recognise what makes this progress meaningful and sustainable: ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow and fulfil their potential.

This belief is closely aligned with Akshaya Patra's journey in Karnataka. The Foundation began its school feeding programme in Bengaluru in 2000, recognising that a nutritious meal can play an important role in supporting a child's education. Since then, it has worked alongside the Government of Karnataka to strengthen children's nutrition through school meals.

What Kannada Rajyotsava Means

On 1 November 1956, under the States Reorganisation Act, Kannada-speaking regions that had been spread across several administrative units were brought together into one state, then known as Mysore State. It was renamed Karnataka on 1 November 1973. For generations of Kannadigas, Kannada Rajyotsava marks the culmination of a long movement for linguistic and cultural unity.

Today, the day is observed with flag hoisting, cultural programmes and the Rajyotsava Awards honouring distinguished citizens. Beneath the celebrations is a simple idea: a state thrives when its people, especially its children, are given the chance to learn and grow.

For Kannadigas, the day celebrates a shared linguistic and cultural identity. It is also a reminder that a state's progress rests on the opportunities it creates for future generations.

Akshaya Patra’s Journey in Karnataka

Akshaya Patra implements the PM POSHAN scheme, formerly the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, in government and government-aided schools. In Karnataka, it currently serves over 4.6 lakh children across 3,000+ schools.

Karnataka is where Akshaya Patra's journey began in 2000. In 2003, the Foundation signed an MoU with the Government of Karnataka to implement Akshara Dasoha, the state’s mid-day meal programme for schoolchildren. The agreement was a milestone for the sector: it made Akshaya Patra the first NGO to adopt the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model in mid-day meals, a model that has shaped its work in the state ever since.

Today, Akshaya Patra is the world’s largest NGO-run school feeding programme and one of the best-known NGOs in India. Since then, the Foundation has served nearly 2 billion mid-day meals in the state.

How Many Kitchens Does Akshaya Patra Have in Karnataka

Akshaya Patra currently serves around 4.6 lakh children in 11 locations across the state because of the network of kitchens the Foundation has built over the years. Akshaya Patra has set up centralised kitchens in HK Hill, Vasanthapura, Ballari, Hubballi, Mangaluru, Mysuru, Jigani, Mahadevpura, Chikkajala, Avalahalli and Sidlaghatta.

Each kitchen cooks fresh, hygienic meals at scale and delivers them to schools in sealed, insulated vehicles. This network is the backbone of the mid-day meal that several children and families in the state rely on every school day.

As a practice, Akshaya Patra designs menus with the local palate in mind, so meals are nutritious and familiar to the children eating them. Karnataka is primarily a rice-eating region, so rice forms an important part of the meals Akshaya Patra prepares for children. The menus feature locally loved dishes such as rice-sambar, rasam-rice, puliyogare and lemon-rice, bringing familiar flavours to the school meal.

As part of the Government of Karnataka’s Ksheera Bhagya programme, Akshaya Patra also serves milk to children, adding another layer of nutrition to their day.

The impact of the mid-day meal programme shows up in the classroom: less classroom hunger, better concentration and stronger attendance. It all comes back to one belief: no child should be deprived of education because of hunger.

The Power of Collective Efforts

What makes Akshaya Patra’s work in Karnataka possible is a partnership of many hands. The Government of Karnataka provides the framework and support, donors and corporate partners help fund the kitchens and meals, and thousands of kitchen staff, drivers and school teams work together to get a hot meal to every child on every school day.

Over the years, this collective effort has grown from a single kitchen in Bengaluru into one of the state’s most trusted school feeding networks, helping children stay in school, stay focused and stay healthy.
